It has been extensively discussed and the name agreed upon by the readers of alt.config. For your newsgroups file: alt.india.progressive - progressive politics in the Indian sub-continent. (Moderated) Moderator address: biju+@pitt.edu * * * * * Dear Fellow Newsadmin: Enclosed is the charter for the moderated newsgroup Alt.india.progressive. This group was extensively discussed in alt.config for the past several months. It was incorrectly created as a non-moderated newsgroup (alt.politics.india.progressive) by a newsadmin who did not know how to create moderated newsgroups. Instead of issuing a rmgroup for "alt.POLITICS.india.progressive", I have chosen to simply issue the correct "newgroup" command for Biju Mathew's "alt.india.progressive". You can decide for yourself if you wish to carry the unmoderated newsgroup which was NOT discussed in alt.config. Please do not simply alias the two groups together (especially if you are running a B-news site!) Many thanks, Terry J. Wood (tjw+@pitt.edu) University of Pittsburgh Computing and Information Services Systems and Networks Group ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charter for alt.india.progressive: *From: IN%"biju+@pitt.edu" "Biju Mathew" 15-MAY-1993 14:25:21.09 *Subj: alt.india.progressive - MODERATED Here is the proposal for a MODERATED newsgroup, ALT.INDIA.PROGRESSIVE. The proposal itself is an exact replica of the one I had posted earlier for alt.politics.india.progressive which was unfortunately created as an unmoderated group. biju ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----Original Proposal---- This is a proposal for a new MODERTAED newsgroup under the Alt hierarchy to discuss progressive politics in the Indian sub-continent. This newsgroup hopes to provide a forum to discuss the following: The politics of: a. Communalism: In the recent past in India, a great deal of violence has been unleashed by communal forces. Hundreds have been killed and the country still remains tension ridden. The topic of communalism will be taken up from various perspectives - historical, sociological and political-economy based analyses to mention just a few. b. Caste, Class, Race and Gender: While not independent of the first issue, it is felt by many that problems of Caste, Class, Race and Gender impact the communal problem in various ways. Similar discussions on these will also contribute richly to an understandings of the potential for progressive politics in the Indian sub-continent. c. Ecology and Land: In India, Ecology and Land, just as in the US, have begun to take center stage among what is being referred to as "new social movements." Do these movements reflect a possibility for progressive politics? d. Diaspora Culture & Ethnicity: Indians in the US particularly and in other parts of the world - the entire immigrant population, chooses peculiar ways of entering the political space in the sub-continent. Questions related to how the "immigrant Indian," with his/her concerns about Indian politics and culture acts in the metropolitan west become very important in the context of a newsgroup located outside here. e. Other such topics We are proposing such a newsgroup because no such forum for a coherent discussion on these and related subjects exists. Other newsgroups related to India or things Indian are either focused on specific cultural issues, such as music or language, or are high-volume, chaotic and vulnerable to saturation by a few individuals. These concerns strongly indicate the need for moderation. The moderator, for now, will be Biju Mathew (Biju+@pitt.edu). The proposed name of the newsgroup is *alt.india.progressive*. The Guidelines for moderation will be: 1. Messages must fall within the charter of the newsgroup. 2. Messages are reasonably argued. For example, posts that resort to name calling and personal attacks will not be accepted. 3. The moderator will not allow personal biases to influence the moderation decisions.
